Thank you for this post. Buying a new hybrid is often not the best option, because while it does raise the demand for better vehicles, it also raises the demand for vehicles, period.

We own a 1990 Volvo that does not get very good mileage.  On the other hand, I drive it about 20 miles a week.  I maintain that I am better off having this older car and driving it less (basically keeping it off the road), than buying a brand new more fuel efficient vehicle.  On the other hand, if I were to commute in my Volvo every day, the equation would change, obviously.

I'm lucky enough to live in a city with more-than-decent public transportation and various incentives to use it (have you seen how Bostonians DRIVE??? ;-)).</description>
