JUCCCE Clean Energy Forum–Closing Summary

The following is the complete transcript, modified and supplemented for completeness and readability, of the closing speech that the author of this blog (pictured below) delivered on November 11 at the JUCCCE Clean Energy Forum in Beijing.
We are at war.  A world war.  But unlike World War I or II, this is not a war [...]

Green Hops: BYD Auto, Algae, Green Bricks

BYD Auto/ Warren Buffet Update. Seems like the investment of Warren Buffet’s MidAmerican Energy Holdings in Shezhen-based BYD Auto is not just a bet on electric vehicles, but also on the collaboration between MidAmerican and BYD to develop “rapid charge batteries” for electrical grid systems to serve as energy storage for renewable but intermittent power [...]

Xiamen City: Urban Planning for Climate Change

I am really excited.

On May 10 (incidentally, but fittingly, Pangea Day) at the Xiamen Climate Change Symposium held at Xiamen University in Xiamen City, Fujian, I was introduced to an exciting opportunity for Xiamen City to undertake what has potential to be a truly groundbreaking project.

A consortium comprised by CHORA (an urban planning, architectural and [...]

Managing the Mobile Dragon–Disruptive Systems Over Disruptive Technologies

Gridlock in Chongqing: Is this what they call progress?

While one can take heart that what seem liked unabated proliferation of SUVs just a few years ago is giving way to a range of smaller, more fuel efficient passenger vehicles (see last post on my review of the Beijing auto show), the fact remains that China [...]

Illusions of Reform and the Need for Integrated Governance

Over the past week or so, I’ve had the privilege to get some high level access to some of the leading academics and government officials in Chinese environmental policy and law here in Beijing. I was an observer at a private high-level roundtable discussion on Chinese environmental governance held at Tsinghua University this past Sunday.
One [...]

China’s Construction Boom/Doom

Anyone who has recently been to any sizeable Chinese city can attest that the pace of building construction in China is simply astounding. By some accounts, China is adding some 2 billion square meters of construction area per year, accounting for nearly half the world’s total. These superlative statistics coincide with the largest scale of [...]

Green Hops: Supercities; Rule of Law; Auto Parts Recycling

Newsy tidbits on green developments in China, sans analysis.
Super eco-cities? The unstoppable drive in China towards increased urbanization in the midst of the massive scale of rural-to-urban migration is well known. A report by McKinsey, the prestigious global consulting firm, advocates that China undertakes a more concentrated form of urbanization by building 15 [...]

Singapore and China to build Tianjin Eco-city

Eco-cities are in vogue. Renown eco-architect William McDonough has long been a champion, global engineering firm Arup is building a high-profile one near Shanghai, and earlier this year, Abu Dhabi announced its own eco-city intentions through the Masdar Initiative.
The Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city is among the latest projects to join this growing movement. [...]

What is the Green Leap Forward?

The Great Leap Forward was an economic and social plan used from 1958 to 1960 which aimed to use China's vast population to rapidly transform mainland China from a primarily agrarian economy dominated by peasant farmers into a modern, industrialized communist society. It is now widely seen, both within and outside of China, as an major economic (and environmental) disaster.

By contrast, the Green Leap Forward, is an emerging movement to harness and combine the powerful forces of smart policy, sustainable finance and green technologies to steer China's red-hot economy onto a more ecologically and socially sustainable path. Unlike its predecessor, the Green Leap Forward is as much a bottom-up revolution as it is a top-down one and in this age of increasing global interconnectedness, is a movement that will have an impact beyond its borders.
